Standardized testing is required every year in high school.
You can find New York’s specific recordkeeping requirements, if any, above.
These should include the number of hours of instruction during the quarter, a description of the material covered in each subject, and a grade or narrative evaluation in each subject.
Quarterly report forms are available to HSLDA members on our website. In grades 1–3, you can have your student take a standardized test or you can choose to submit a written narrative evaluation for your student.
These records may be requested in some situations, such as obtaining a driver's license if your child is a minor, enlisting in the military, applying to colleges, or demonstrating eligibility for Social Security benefits.
If you are a member of HSLDA and would like additional details, please contact us.
However, even if your child is beyond compulsory school attendance age, there may be situations where you would want to continue to follow the requirements of a home education option recognized under New York law until your child graduates from high school (filing a home education notice, keeping attendance and other records, etc.).
However, any local board of education can vote to raise the compulsory attendance age in its school district from 16 to 17 for minors who are not employed.
Some school districts have lowered the compulsory attendance age to 5 for children who turn 5 on or before December 1.
New York Public Health Law § 2164 states that every parent shall immunize their child against “poliomyelitis, mumps, measles, diphtheria, rubella, varicella, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), pertussis, tetanus, pneumococcal disease, and hepatitis B.” However, homeschool parents are not required to demonstrate proof of these vaccines in order to educate their children.
In our opinion, homeschool children who receive special education services from their local school district also should not be required to show proof of immunization.
